Mission

The 2023 Equinox New Play Festival is a student-produced play festival within the University of the Arts’ Ira Brind School of Theater Arts production season. The Equinox Festival strives to challenge, entertain and nourish its audience through the development, sharing, and critical engagement of new student work. It is an opportunity for students across all majors to experience the theatre-making process and be apart of the creation of something new. Within our creative practice we hold these core values:

  • The Equinox Festival’s purpose is to foster an educational experience for future generations of theatre artists. It gives students the opportunity and space to try something new even if it is not within their major. We strive to foster an environment where UArts students can bridge the gap between the training they receive in the classroom and the hands-on application of theater-making.

  • We seek to uphold a professional, organized, and resilient working environment. Bridging the gap from college to real-world theater practice by implementing clear channels of communication, a focus on detailed, relevant information, and a practical perspective on what is achievable given the constraints of the Festival.

  • The Equinox 2023 Production Team strives to practice communicative and empathetic leadership qualities, in order to be a strong voice for student theater artists, both within Equinox and beyond. The Festival will gather a community of students to develop their crafts sustainably, equitably and with consent. The team is working to create a playwright-forward process that will allow new work to be developed collaboratively in the hands of students harnessing new roles.

  • We will utilize the lessons learned from past experiences to inform our voices and impact within the community, both the local community we build as a team and the larger community we invite to engage with our work. Our process will aim to not only acknowledge what happens in the world around us, but to question how we face it and how we can be the strongest voice possible for our community.

  • The Equinox New Play Festival is open to all who want to take risks creating fresh, new, never seen before plays that rethink theater. Equinox gives playwrights and theater artists a brave space to innovate, providing a space for consent and support.
